David Gudgin 26 Round 2 28/05/2013

Round two of the David Gudgin series threatened to be just as wet as the first however the cycling gods were smiling on the Nomads as the rain halted about an hour before the event kicked off.

Five hardy Nomads chose to ignore the rain when packing their cars so as to compete in Round 2 of the 25 mile series. The competition requires that  riders post three times, out of the possible four, and for the average of their best three times to be proffered for consideration.

The course was once again the modified 26 mile course and whilst there was no rainfall during the event, the corners were wet and greasy so caution had to be applied whilst riding.

It was Andrew Herbert who posted the fastest time of the evening with a 1:03:01. Simon Doyle came home in second spot with James Gomm third.

Interclub 30 - Results and Report 26 May 2013

The sun-kissed Bedforshire roads saw four of the area's leading time trialling squads battle it out on a demanding, three circuit loop of Southill and Old Warden. The second of the 2013 Interclub series saw Simon Norman (Bedfordshire Road CC) edge Nigel Hale (CC Ashwell) in to second place by 18 seconds. CC Ashwell dominated the top five places with Cameron Woolsey and Jason Stuart both going sub 1:10 for the distance. Beds Road CC controlled the places from 10 down to 30, showing strength in depth and proving that time trialling really has a great pool of riders in and around the Cardington based club's HQ.

Hitchin Nomads CC managed to place five riders in point scoring positions with Club Captain, Simon Doyle, posting 1:13:24 for seventh spot. Neil Bridgland, Steve Austin and Warren Richards all made their time trial debuts.

Icknield RC placed five riders in scoring positions with Oliver Cocks being first IRC rider past the timekeeper.

Briercliffe 10 21/05/2013 - Evening Series Round 7 - Report

Round 7 of the 2013 Briercliffe 10 mile time trial series was contested in overcast yet fresh conditions. However, considering it is the middle of May, it was at least dry which is a big improvement over the previous week.

Ryan Witchell was the first Nomad home with a personal course best of 23m 41s. Andrew Herbert and Simon Doyle were second and third Nomads respectively.

Jason Stuart of CC Ashwell posted the fastest time of the evening with a 23m 05s which is also his person best on this course. New Nomad Warren Richards got under evens in his first ever time trial which is no mean feat around the Briercliffe circuit.

Thanks goes to James Spence for timekeeping and also to Frank Turner who assisted with time keeping and to Geoff Perry for pushing off. Paul Riley offered encouragement from the margins as did Richard Bland.

Sportive Provisional Timings and Report

Sunday 19th May 2013 saw a multitude of riders make the most of the sunny weather to compete in the 80 Km and 80 mile versions of the classic Nomads route. With competitor numbers rising to record levels (over 200 riders participated) the event is maturing in to a mainstay of the local and regional sportive calendar.

Many local clubs were represented which shows that the two routes are now becoming fixtures in local club run calendars. The number of unaffiliated or new riders was also up. The  2012 "Wiggo" effect is still in evidence as those 2012 purchases translate in to 2013 achievments.

The 80 mile route proved to be tough going in places. For the uninitiated the climb at around 40 miles from Hexton to the approaches of Lilley  saw many reaching for the 28 tooth sprocket. The mountain goats who traversed it more rapidly had the chance to emulate the Giro d'Italia competitors who were facing the Galibier at the same time. Unlike the professionals, the sportive riders were only a matter of miles from Emily's Tearooms in Whitwell which was the second of two well stocked feed stations. Far more pleasant than sub-zero Alpine conditions.

2013 Sportive - Important information for riders

With almost 200 riders expected on Sunday, I thought it would be useful to outline the pre-race procedure so that we can process everyone with the minimum of delay.

1)      There will be three separate registration queue lanes organised by the distance you will be riding. 80K / 80 Mile / All Entries on the Day. Please make sure that you join the correct queue as only this desk will be able to register you.

2)      At registration you will be given your pack containing your start number and course card.

3)      The Commemorative Cycle gilets will also be given out at registration, these can be worn for the ride if it is chilly. NO GILETS will be available for collection at the finish.

4)      You will also be asked to verify the number of the mobile phone you will be carrying, which must be switched on while riding. This is for your own safety. Please ensure that you have your number handy at registration as this causes a significant delay otherwise.

5)      Finally GPX routes are attached which cover both courses, these are provided for guidance only and should not be relied upon as your sole navigation tool. Course cards and signage are also provided to help you with route navigation.

Please note :  The start list is available for download: Start list pdf - Riders entering since the list was generated have been added to the 9:12h start.

Remember to bring your helmet. Additional information can be found on the Sportive page of this blog.

If anyone needs to change their start slot in order to ride with friends Please notify Guy Travers by return e-mail no later than Thursday 16th May 2013. After this time no changes to rider numbers or start times will be possible.

Registration will open at 7:30h so if you can arrive early it would be preferable to do so. We look forward to seeing you at Hitchin Rugby Club, Old Hale Way on Sunday morning.

Medium Gear 72" & David Gudgin 26 Round 1 14/05/2013

After the Medium Gear event in March was cancelled due to snow, you would be forgiven for thinking you had gone back in time to March tonight. The temperature dropped to single figures, the rain fell continuously and it felt ominously dark from the very start. It was what can only be described as a thoroughly miserable evening.

Still this didn't deter five riders from making it out, with four riders competing in the rescheduled Medium Gear 72" and a lone rider competing in round 1 of the David Gudgin 25 26 series. Due to some traffic light controlled roadworks on the B658 the usual course had to be changed to a lumpier and longer 26 mile course around Old Warden.

After the gearing sizes had been verified (to prevent anyone sneaking an extra couple of inches) it was James Gomm who rode to victory in the Medium Gear 72" event. Nick Hickman came in second with John Traynor in 3rd place and Steve Smith finishing in 4th.

Nigel Wilson was the only rider to compete in round 1 of the David Gudgin series on the same circuit, making the most of the slow conditions for a good foundation in the competition.

A massive thanks goes to James Spence for timekeeping, Frank Turner for assisting, Clive Collins for pushing off and to Geoff Perry for support. Paul Riley was also seen at the start for some pre race bante.

DAVID GUDGIN 25 & MEDIUM GEAR UPDATE

Due to roadworks with traffic lights on the B658 between Shefford and the Broom crossroads we are unable to use the 1U/25 course as planned. Instead we will use the 26 mile course around Old Warden that was used for the 2-Up TT earlier this year. The course is as follows:

START on west side of unclassified road (Old Warden-Southill) at GR 151428 and proceed northwards to T-junction at Old Warden.
TURN LEFT to Cardington junctions where LEFT and continue under disused railway bridge and through Ireland where LEFT uphill and LEFT to triangle.
BEAR LEFT over humpback bridge and continue to junction where LEFT through Southill village to Broom cross roads.
TURN LEFT onto B658 and go North to G&M Growers where LEFT to Old Warden through village
Continue through village, past Southill-Old Warden and Cardington junctions to disused railway bridge where left uphill and left at junction to triangle where left over hump back bridge.  Continue and take first left through Southill village to Broom cross roads where left onto B658.  Repeat circuit once more via Broom cross roads and continue to GM Growers and through Old Warden to Southill-Old Warden junction
LEFT into starting road to FINISH on east side of road at GR 146432

So Start on the 10 start, do three laps of the outer 10 course loop and finish at the 25 finish after the third time up Shuttleworth Hill and through Old Warden.

The roadworks are scheduled to be there for the next 6-8 weeks, so it is likely that all 4 of the David Gudgin's will take place on this course.

As far as the handicapped competitions go, we will be able to work out a 25 time based on the 26 course to compare to the standards etc by calculating the average time per mile and then subtracting that time from the total 26 time.

Race Report - Bossard Wheelers Open 10 Mile Time Trial (11 May 2013)

Five Hitchin Nomads CC riders competed in the Bossard Wheelers event which was held on the F15/10 course near Marston Moretaine. Andrew Hebert achieved fourth place in the competition with a time of 22m 18s. The conditions were wet and breezy, making Herbert's time all the more impressive.

James Gomm  and Nick Hickman both recorded personal bests for the distance and Mike Webb also improved on his last three season best time.

Results
A Herbert 22.18, S Doyle 23.37, J Gomm 24.11, N Hickman 24.35, M Webb 25.12.

Briercliffe 10 07/05/2013 - Evening Series Round 6 - Report

The uncharacteristically nice May Bank Holiday weather managed to linger long enough to provide the riders with a mild and dry evening for Round 6 of the Briercliffe 10 mile time trial series.

The first three riders were separated by just 20 seconds with Andrew Herbert topping the roster with a 24m 13s. Simon Doyle once again edged out Ryan Witchell to take 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Tonight's results mirrored last week's top three placings.

Nick Hickman managed to obliterate his best time for the course by over a minute to record a time of 26:14. Hickman had recorded a personal best over the Bank Holiday weekend as he represented the Nomads in the Cheshire J2/1 based event.

Tom Trimble of CC Ashwell posted the fastest time of the evening with a 23m 55s, thereby going under 24 minutes for the first time on this course.

Thanks goes to James Spence for timekeeping and also to Frank Turner who assisted with time keeping and to Geoff Perry for pushing off.
