Medium Gear 72" & David Gudgin 26 Round 1 14/05/2013

After the Medium Gear event in March was cancelled due to snow, you would be forgiven for thinking you had gone back in time to March tonight. The temperature dropped to single figures, the rain fell continuously and it felt ominously dark from the very start. It was what can only be described as a thoroughly miserable evening. 

Still this didn't deter five riders from making it out, with four riders competing in the rescheduled Medium Gear 72" and a lone rider competing in round 1 of the David Gudgin 25 26 series. Due to some traffic light controlled roadworks on the B658 the usual course had to be changed to a lumpier and longer 26 mile course around Old Warden. 

After the gearing sizes had been verified (to prevent anyone sneaking an extra couple of inches) it was James Gomm who rode to victory in the Medium Gear 72" event. Nick Hickman came in second with John Traynor in 3rd place and Steve Smith finishing in 4th.

Nigel Wilson was the only rider to compete in round 1 of the David Gudgin series on the same circuit, making the most of the slow conditions for a good foundation in the competition. 

A massive thanks goes to James Spence for timekeeping, Frank Turner for assisting, Clive Collins for pushing off and to Geoff Perry for support. Paul Riley was also seen at the start for some pre race bante.

15/05/2012 Medium Gear 72" and David Gudgin Results

In what can only be described as miserable and off-putting weather conditions prior to the event, it was no surprise that the field was reduced to five starters. It was a three way race for the rescheduled Medium Gear 72" with James Gomm eventually taking the honours, but with Jon Traynor suffering from cramp half way round, thoughts of "what if" were circulated around at the finish.

For the first of the David Gudgin 25 time trials it was a head to head race between Beds Roads teammates Graham and Jaouade, with Graham crossing the line with the fastest time of the day. Man of the day has to go to Frank Turner to resisted the movement to the pub by his fellow timekeepers after the start to be present at the end of the race to record those ever so important seconds.

Medium Gear 25 (72") - 24th March 2012

This Saturday's event is the Medium Gear 72" so time to dust down those single speed machines or get busy with a screwdriver. 

Frank will be there with his tape measure to verify gearing, so no trying to sneak a couple of extra inches! First rider off at 8:30am so please arrive by 8:15 am on the start line between Southill and Ireland (Route here). Entry on the line, £2 HNCC members, £3 non-members.


Notes from Frank: If using single speed with 700c x 23/25 wheels the following chainring/sprocket sizes are appropriate for the medium gear.

46-17 --- 71’7”
48-18 --- 70’7”
51-19 --- 71’1”

With multi-speed gears the machine must be set to prevent the selection of a ratio higher than specified. The ratio selected can be determined by using the following calculation. Number of teeth on ring divided number of teeth on block multiplied by 26.5 (700c x 25).

Alternatively, hold the machine with one crank vertically down, mark the point immediately below the pedal, wheel the machine BACKWARDS in a straight line until the same pedal is at the bottom, mark the second point. The distance between the marks must not exceed 18 ft 10 ins (5.74 metres).

It may be possible to achieve this by adjusting the limit stop on the rear mechanism to prevent the higher ratios being selected and/or adjusting the stop on the front mechanism to prevent the large chainring being selected.

Prior to the start of the medium gear machines will be checked when signing on, this can take some time. Riders intending to enter are requested to ensure that ratios above 72 inches are locked out or a reliable indicator is attached to the gear cable run to show if high gears have been selected after the start. Arrival after 8am may mean you are out of luck!
